I couldn't sleep in that horrid hotel they sent me to. Its urban, contemporary deco which involved way too much black which was just depressing me. I slept for three hours and then lay awake stewing over the night before. I was out of there shortly after 07h00 and after another heated argument with an unhelpful receptionist who wanted to charge me full price for the awful room.
Thankfully back at my parents' hotel things started to improve. We had a fantastic breakfast in a large alcove type private sroom which seated us all perfectly. The breakfast offered a huge selection of goodies and I'm sure we sat down there for a good hour. By 09h30 I had the key to the roof top suite and it really did not disappoint: bedroom, lounge and dining area and a huge roof terrace with loungers and another eating area. It was perfect meeting point for our party. We made excellent use of the terrace, having lunch there, my post lunch siesta on the lounger and then pre dinner drinks too. In fact it was almost worth the night in that awful room.
The rest of my Madrid experience was fantastic. We were in a lovely part of the city with lots of greenery and space (and 100m away from the Ritz). We enjoyed some shopping in the morning, a tapas break at one of my dad's old haunts and then caught up with old family friends in the afternoon. My perfect day ended with a delicious dinner and a very good night's sleep!
So I am happy to say that my weekend away did have a happy ending and I returned to home feeling happy, shopped and and totally refreshed. I totally recommend it for any tired out parent!
